The ace driver from the Central Region came all the way to battle at Mobara Twin !? Hibino has been a regular as one of the judge for MSC Challenge events, but has announced that he will be participating as a driver this year. As he promised, he showed up at the first event in Mobara circuit. He was already chosen as the judge for the Central Japan Region MSC Challenge events, but his passionate wish granted him to compete in the East Japan Region events.
Hibino competed with a S14 and not in the usual D1GP AE86. We believe that he wanted to compete in a car similar to the level of fellow competitors. However, the S14 was not his first choice for this Mobara competition. He was preparing a S15 Silvia, but at just three days before the competition day, the car had sudden problems and had to do a last minute switch to the S14.
Even as a top D1 driver, being in a new car and new track for the first time, the situation was not very favorable for Hibino. His performance in the qualifying round was mediocre as he only resulted at 7th position going into the tandem rounds.
Hibino obviously was not driving his best in both the practice and qualifying sessions and doubts began to swarm on how he might perform in the tandem rounds.
As if he was trying to blow away everyone’s skepticism, Hibino’s tandem runs were incredible. When he chased, he stuck closely onto the lead car and made no mistakes. His lead runs simply overwhelmed the car behind him. Having to change a car at the last minute was likely going to be a drawback, but Hibino still managed to crush his competitors.
Looking back at the event, Hibino’s tandem runs were merely surrounded with an aura… and he was the one to grab the top podium spot at the end.
